Illegal and unsafe gold mining practices in the riverine regions of Ghana, carried out by locals to earn money and support their families, undermine two of the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals: good health and well-being, and clean water and sanitation. While these activities may provide short-term financial benefits, they ultimately leave communities with contaminated water and poor sanitation, compromising their health and well-being.
